McCrystal frustrated with "shocking" media treatment of Irish Para Worlds team

Eve McCrystal has expressed her frustration at what she saw as a lack of media interest in the exploits of the Irish team after their medal-winning performances at the UCI Paracycling World Road Championships in Canada last week.

The team returned home with a haul of medals – gold, silver and bronze – from the road races and TTs at the Worlds in Baie Comeau.

However, McCrystal noted no media turned up at Dublin Airport – for press interviews – as the team arrived home.

“Sitting wondering would any other sport able bodied or para have three world champions and a world bronze walk through the doors of Dublin Airport and not have media to greet them. Shocking really,” she said on Twitter.

At the Worlds Katie George Dunlevy and McCrystal, the double Paralympic champions, won silver in the ‘Women’s B’ TT and gold in the road race. Ronan Grimes also won road race gold after a bronze medal in the TT. Furthermore, in the same road race that Dunlevy and McCrystal won, Josephine Healion and Linda Kelly claimed the bronze medal.

While the exploits of the team were covered by the national media – including RTE and the main newspapers in Ireland – there was no coverage of the team’s homecoming, which was not publicised in advance.
