Cyclist left dead on Kildare roadside for up to 14 hours after driver fled scene

A cyclist was left dead on a roadside in Co Kildare for up to 14 hours after the driver left the scene and the victim's body was not found until the next day.

However, gardaí have been unable to pinpoint the time of the man's death between late last night, Thursday, and just before lunchtime today, Friday, on the R445, Dublin Road, Co Kildare.

"The collision involving a cyclist is believed to have occurred between approximately 10:30pm on Thursday and 12:30pm today, when the cyclist was discovered," a Garda statement said.

"The deceased man aged in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has since been removed to Naas General Hospital where a post mortem examination will take place in due course. The road remains closed with local diversions in place."

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have been travelling on the R445 Dublin Road between Kildare Town and the roundabout at junction 12 of the N7 between 10:30pm last night and 12:30pm today to come forward.

Anyone travelling in the area during this time, and who may have camera footage, including dash cam or mobile phone recordings, is asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.

The death of the man in Kildare was the second cycling fatality in the Republic this week after a man cycling in Co Mayo was killed in a crash involving a driver on Wednesday.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward after that fatal crash outside Ballinrobe on the N84 at Carrowkeel, shortly after 9pm.

The cyclist, a man in his mid 50s, sustained serious injuries, and was transported to University College Hospital, Galway where he was later pronounced deceased.
