In the same session that Ireland's newest star rider, Emer Heverin, won silver in the junior women's omnium, Seth Dunwoody had raced to a European title; the special talent from Armagh making his first major track outing look easy.
Dunwoody, crowned the U23-elite men's Irish road race champion two weeks ago, claimed the gold medal in the U23 points race at the Junior & U23 European Track Championships in Germany today.
A special talent from the early days in his youth career, Dunwoody had never raced the track as an U23 before this week. Indeed, his last outing on the boards was at the Europeans two years ago, when he crashed.
But he had placed 5th in qualifying in the U23 men's individual pursuit a few days ago, in his first ever individual pursuit. And this evening he used his road race and sprint skills, applying them to the track with apparent ease, to win his first European title.
In the 15 sprints over the course of the race, Dunwoody went about scoring points from start to finish - taking someting from eight of the 15 sprints and winning three of them.
By the finish, he had scooped up 23 points, to claim the gold medal from Russia's Ilya Savekin, who scored 20 points, and Germany's Tobias Muller, who took bronze on 19 points.
More to come.
