A man in his 30s has died from the injuries he sustained, while cycling, in a crash in Kilkenny involving a driver in a car. The victim had been in critical condition in hospital since the collision last Wednesday but has since died.
His death brings to six the number of cyclists killed on the roads of the Republic since the start of the year. There were 14 cyclist deaths in all of last year.
Gardaí last week launched an appeal for witnesses and have restated that appeal following the death of the man after the fatal incident on the L100 Tullaroan Road, Loughmacask, Kilkenny, Co Kilkenny.
"The collision involved a car and a cyclist and occurred at approximately 5:30pm," the Garda said in a statement following the death of the man on Saturday, three days after Wednesday's crash.
"A male cyclist, aged in his 30s, was conveyed to St Luke’s General Hospital Carlow-Kilkenny, and subsequently Beaumont Hospital, for treatment of serious injuries. He was pronounced deceased (on Saturday evening)."
It added a post-mortem examination would take place in due course, and that a technical examination of the scene has been conducted.
"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward," the statement said as the investigation continues.
"Road users who were travelling on the L100 Tullaroan Road between 5:00pm and 6:00pm on Wednesday, June 24th, and who may have camera footage - including dash-cam - are asked to make this footage available to gardaí."
