Cyclist seriously injured after hit by driver in car, gardaí investigating

Gardaí have launched an investigation after a cyclist was left seriously injured when hit by a driver in a car early this morning, Monday, in Co Galway.

The injured man, who is in his 50s, was taken from the scene in Portumna to University Hospital Galway where his condition was described as serious.

The crash follows other previous incidents in the last fortnight during which cyclists were critically injured.

Last Wednesday a cyclist was left with serious injuries, and was airlifted to hospital, after being hit by a driver in a car this afternoon in Naas, Co Kildare. The weekend before last a man in his 70s was seriously injured on the Stillorgan Road, N11, after a crash with a motorist. He was taken to Beaumont Hospital.

The latest incident today in the Portumna area occurred at about 6.15am when the cyclist was hit by a driver in a car at Powers Cross, Ballyshrule. Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

“The cyclist, a man in his 50s, was taken to University Hospital Galway to be treated where he is currently in a serious condition,” a Garda statement said of the crash. “The road was closed to allow for a technical examination to be carried out by Forensic Collision Investigators. It has since reopened.

“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and are also appealing to any road users with video footage from the location between 6:00 – 6:30am to make it available to them.”
