More Irish road races at risk of cancellation over lack of entries

Having run a fantastic event over the last few seasons, Galway Cycling Club is at risk of having to scale-back the Galway Classic promotion due to a lack of entries from some categories.

While the main event - for A1-A2 men - has been well-support with pre-entries and will definitely go ahead, the other races on the day are now at risk of being cancelled. There has been very little interest from female riders, the host club reports, while the interest from A3s for their separate event has also been low.

The Galway Classic is a unique event in Irish road racing as it takes in off-road sections of gravel. Conor Murnane of UCD Cycling Club, but riding for Leinster Cycling, won the main event last year while Lorcan Daly of Killarney CC won the A3 race.

The events are being held on Sunday week, May 15th. The A1-A2 race is 150km while the A3 races is due to be 100km and the women's race almost 100km.

However, the organisers say a lot more entries are required if the women's race is to take place while interest in the A3 event is also low and more riders are required. You can enter any of the races by following this link.

"We have endeavoured to include women’s racing in our event for 2022, however it appears the appetite for a separate women’s ‘Classic’ race doesn’t exist," the organisers said in a statement.

"It seems also that we are not immune to the current decline in racing numbers generally. Currently we have only nine riders registered for the women’s race and just 20 for the A3 race.

"Due to the significant expense and effort involved, if these numbers don’t double or more by close of registrations next Thursday May 12th we will be forced to cancel both the women’s and A3 races. The A+-A1-A2 race will go ahead as planned."
