Josh Callaly takes second win of season on home roads

Josh Callaly of Velo Performane has scored his second win of the season after proving best at the Moynalty GP

Having done some of his racing abroad this year with Velo Performance Development, Josh Callaly has taken his second win of the season on home roads today, Sunday.

He was best at the end of the Moynalty GP, run off in sweltering heat in Kells, Co Meath, after getting into the day's main breakaway and then attacking from it late in the day.

In the 113km race, over seven laps, promoted by Moynalty CC, Gareth O'Neill (Athlete Nutrition Coach HD) lit it up with a bag attack from the breakaway group on the penultimate lap.

As well as O'Neill and Callaly, that breakaway group also included Darnell Moore (Caldwell Powerhouse), Ciaran Maguire (Team Dan Morrissey Pissei), Ruari Woods (Burren CC) Paul Kennedy (Burren CC) and Peter McLean (Velo Café Magasin), the latter puncturing out.

The timing of O'Neill's attack was crucial as a four-rider chasing group had been closing in and was right behind the breakaway, eventually catching it.

Callaly responded and when the duo carved out their initial gap, they got down to the job of sharing the workload in a bid to stay clear of the chasers.

After a strong performance by the leading duo, they survived out front to contest the finish, with Callaly going very early in the gallop to steal a march on O'Neill, who had to be content with second place today.

Maguire was best of the rest, winning the battle for 3rd place from the remains of the breakaway.

Callaly adds his win today to a fine stage victory at Dornan Rás Mumhan in Co Kerry at Easter, where he was also 4th in the final general classification.
