Matteo Cigala, an Italian rider who has been top-ranked A1 racing cyclist in Ireland twice, has win the Gran Fondo European Championships in Italy today.
The 28-year-old, a former Italian U23 international, was best in the sprint to the line from the front group today at Granfondo Matildica. His victory follows on from a series of Gran Fondo wins this year and last.
He took victory in Gran Fondo Strade Bianche in Italy last September and the following month went on to also win Gran Fondo Il Lombardia. This year he has been back in Italy competing, winning Gran Fondo Strade Bianche again and taking 2nd in Nove Colli.
Today's European title event in Italy was 159km with 2,650m of climbing. Cigala (Dan Morrissey-Pactimo) sprinted in at the head of the nine-man front group to win after 4hrs 18mins of riding.
More to come.
