Matteo Cigala wins Gran Fondo Il Lombardia in Cantù today; the Irish-based Italian producing a strong finish to get clear of the other riders left in the lead group

Matteo Cigala has taken victory in the Gran Fondo Il
Lombardia in Cantù, Italy, just weeks after he won Gran Fondo Strade Bianchi.

The Italian rider, who is based in Ireland and has previously been the top-ranked Cycling Ireland A1 rider on the domestic scene, took victory today at the end of the 111.2km event just ahead of his nearest rivals.

A strong finish from the Dan Morrissey-MIG-Pactimo rider saw him pull ahead of Italians Paolo Castelnovo (ASD Team MP Filtri) and Rossano Mauti (ASD Cicli Rossi) who finished in 2nd and 3rd at four seconds.

Just behind the runner-up and 3rd place rider came the
other two riders who had been at the front of the event in the finale. Luca Verhallito (OM CC) was 4th at 14 seconds and Nicola
Bonetti (GS LA Recastello) was 5th at 21 seconds.

The next small group on the road was over four minutes back. The 1,500 rider field split up significantly on a course that included the climbs of Muro di Sormano and Madonna del Ghisallo.
