A major crash at the Quebrantahuesos 2026 sportive in northern Spain has resulted in dozens of riders being treated at the scene and in hospital after the high-speed incident on a highway bridge.
Some reports suggest the surface of the road had become loose, with a lot of gravel at the scene, following recent road works.
Riders in the event have told Spanish media they believed the crash happened when the close-packed riders were doing about 60km per hour.
With a guard rail to the left, to prevent traffic crashing over the side of the bridge, the riders were squeezed against it when the massive pile-up took place.
Some of the images show a bike flying up into the air and falling over the side of the bridge, which appears to be at the centre of where the first riders fell.
After those first fallers came down, because the huge group was tightly packed and riding at speed - on apparently loose gravel - those behind ploughed into the crash, causing a massive pile-up.
Video footage from the scene, below, shows a large number of riders on the ground, with bikes broken up and paramedics trying to tend to the injured.
The event attracts over 11,000 riders and is very popular because it takes in many of the climbs of the Aragonese Pyrenees.
