Eddie Dunbar takes best ever TT result at European Champs

Eddie Dunbar has put in an excellent effort in the U23 TT at the European Road Championships, with Michael O'Loughlin also riding extremely well.

Eddie Dunbar has taken an excellent 6th at the U23 TT at the European Road Championships.

And team mate Michael O’Loughlin was 15th in the same event, adding to a very impressive result for the Irish young guns.

The title was won by the impressive 20-year-old German TT specialist Lennard Kamna.

He is no stranger to the top of the podium at major events having won the junior TT title at the World Road Championships two years ago.

And he also claimed gold at the European Championships in the junior TT, also in 2014.

Kamna was well ahead of the rest, blasting around the 24.5km course in Plumelec in a time of 33:58.87, in an average speed of 43.25km per hour.

Michael O'Loughlin may have a Worlds top 10 to his name, but 15th in the U23 Europeans with still three years to ride in the category is a terrific result.

He was a very significant 30 seconds ahead of Italian Filippo Ganna who won the U23 edition of Paris Roubaix this year.

And rounding out the podium was Remi Cavagna of France who was just 5 seconds off silver. Aged 21 years, he is the French U23 TT champion and is currently plying his trade with Etixx-QuickStep.

Dunbar was exactly one minute off the winner, whipping around the course in an average speed of 42.02km per hour.

He was just 10 seconds off 4th place and 25 seconds off the bronze. It was a fantastic ride for a man who can compete very well against the watch but is not regarded as a TT specialist even though he is the Irish U23 champion.

O’Loughlin, who is in his first year as an U23 rider, was 15th of 50 finishers and was 2:04 off the winner. He rode the course in an average speed of 40.77km per hour for 24.5km course.

And while O’Loughlin finished in the top in the junior TT at the Worlds two years ago, 15th at the Europeans is an excellent result for a rider with three more years at this level.
