Video: Watch Eddie Dunbar nail his TT to become Irish U23 champ

Eddie Dunbar delivered the time-trial of his life at the national championships last night, finishing 22 seconds clear of defending champion Ryan Mullen with only Nicolas Roche ahead of him. The video below is one we think you'll enjoy (Photo and homepage photo by Sean Rowe)

This video takes the viewer behind the scenes of Eddie Dunbar’s time-trial effort during the national championships last night and as you’ll see over the course of it, it was a phenomenal performance.

The 19 year-old Kanturk man was runner-up in the U23 event last year to Ryan Mullen.

But he took the U23 gold medal this time around, with only Nicolas Roche (Team Sky) pipping him for elite gold.

Dunbar’s time of 48’16” was just over a minute slower than Roche’s with Mullen stopping the clock around 22 seconds slower.

To achieve that time, Axeon Hagens Berman man Dunbar pushed a whopping 409 watts over the course of the race; a fantastic number for a rider weighing just 55 kilos and whose speciality is climbing.

Have a look at the video below and observe a few things that led to him clocking that time.

In particular, pay attention to the high cadence Dunbar has worked on maintaining since last year’s championships.

Listen for the sounding of the horn from the car behind - driven by mentor Will Curtin - when his cadence drops, while the rock solid position Dunbar holds throughout is the work of many hours of core work and stretching.

As well as that, watch Dunbar use his two-minute man - Ian Richardson of UCD Fitzcycles.ie - as a carrot while also swinging as far left as possible to avoid any potential turbulence from oncoming civilian traffic.
