Dan McLay took the photo finish, but as the video shows he came down at very high speed just after the finish line.
British sprinter Dan McLay may have sprinted in to win in Spain today, but his celebration was short-lived when he hit a photographer after the finish line.
The sprint was a blanket finish between the really fastmen at the end of the Trofeo Palma; the final event in the Challenge Mallorca series.
McLay (Fortuneo-Vital Concept) was given the verdict in a photo finish after runner-up Matteo Pelucchi (Bora-Hansgrohe) was initially declared victor.
Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) was third and André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) was fourth.
The sprint was so tight that the riders had to keep it going all the way to the line before lunging as hard as they could.
It meant a number of riders came speeding through the finish line and not all of the media a little further down the road had time to get out of the way.
McLay hit one of them and was seen bleeding from the mouth after the incident. He was also unable to go onto the podium for the prize presentation because he was being seen to by medics.
There are no reports of serious injury to the rider or photographer.
However, coming just a few days after very unsafe scenes were witnessed at the Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina it appears the season is getting off to a bad start for safety following something of a horror season last year.
McLay can be seen falling in the first video below at the very end. And while he was able to get back up and remonstrate with officials, he came down at high speed.
