The two-time Tour de France winner came down on a wooden road barrier inside five kilometres and lost touch with the peloton.
He remounted and was working his way back up through the groups, but with such a lightning fast start it took him a while to get back to the peloton.
The 138-kilometre stage today features six categorised climbs and Froome said it would be the hardest of all the stages he’s ever done in Grand Tours.
There were two category one ascents inside 30 kilometres.
