Here’s your chance to play your part in getting what would be an invaluable facility for cyclists in the heart of Dublin.

The Dublin Cycling Campaign is at it again. This time is a bike ride down Dublin’s quays to make the point for cyclists.

It has already staged two very well supported protest bike rides to the Dáil and the office of Minister for Transport Shane Ross as part of its campaign for more public spending for cycling infrastructure.

And the campaign now wants to highlight the specific need for cycling facilities along the quays.

On the north side of the Liffey more cyclists use the quays on their way into town in rush hour than there are cars on the road at that time.

Yet, as the Dublin Cycling Campaign points out, there are only slithers of space set aside for cyclists.

And by riding the length of the river, from the Phoenix Park to the Point Depot the campaign wants to show how great this corridor would be for cycling if the facilities were put in place.

The Liffey Cycleway is set to be constructed along that route but there is opposition to it from many quarters and delays with it beginning construction persist.

This is a great opportunity for cyclists of all ages and abilities to come out and show their support for the new cycleway,” the Dublin Cycling Campaign said.

“The Liffey Cycleway is a segregated two-way cycle path which will run along Dublin’s North Quays.

“The 4.6km path will provide a safe and accessible cycle route from the Phoenix Park all the way to the Point Village.

“Such a facility would open up cycling to people of all ages and abilities, especially those who would like to cycle but are too intimidated by the current traffic conditions.”

The event is on this Sunday, April 2nd, with riders meeting at Wellington Monument in the Phoenix Park and riding out at 11am. Cyclists will ride down the quays to the Point Village.

All are welcomed and the campaign tells us this is a social ride and suitable for families, including those with children.
