The inaugural Sean Lynch Memorial that had been set for
the roads of Co Louth this weekend may be off, but that won’t stop Irish
cycling paying tribute to be one of their own.
Sean sadly died last year a number of days after he
crashed in a race in Co Wexford, stunning the cycling community and leaving his
family grief stricken.
He had ridden for both Drogheda Wheelers and Navan Road
Club during his racing days and was a very popular figure in the bunch.
Shortly after Sean’s sad death last year Drogheda Wheelers announced that, with the support of Sean’s family, they would hold a race in his honour.
That road race – the Sean Lynch Memorial – was due to
take place this weekend but with racing suspended for now due to Covid19 it
cannot go ahead as planned.
However, the latest round of the Cycling Ireland Zwift League, which takes place this Saturday, has been renamed the Sean Lynch Memorial so the cycling community will stick get to honour one of our own.
Cycling Ireland and Drogheda Wheelers are both behind the plan are Sean’s family, who are even putting forward prizes from PRIMO Cycling Apparel for the event.
The idea to name this weekend's virtual race the Sean Lynch Memorial initially came from Sean's brother, Mick, and cycling coach Matteo Cigala.
While it is a real shame the event can’t go on this
weekend, Sean will be honoured by everyone who races this Saturday from home in
the seventh round of the Cycling Ireland league.
And in 12 months time Irish cycling will turn out to honour Sean on the road as planned and offer our solidarity to his family.
Sean tragically lost his life after a racing crash last year; dying in May from injuries he sustained while racing in Co Wexford.
He was critically ill in hospital for a number of days
after he crashed at the Frank O’Rourke Memorial in Camaross promoted by Wexford
Wheelers Cycling Club.
Sadly his injuries were too severe and despite efforts to save him he passed away.
