Rojas posts photos of open leg fractures after crash; reader discretion advised

José Joaquín Rojas shared the photo - below - of the compound fracture to his leg. It's, well, awful.

José Joaquín Rojas has suffered a double compound fracture to his leg after crashing on Saturday’s stage of the Vuelta while descending a climb.

He fell on a sweeping bend as he descended and a nearby vehicle appeared to put him off his line.

He took the corner too video, as the video of the incident revealed, before his wheels went from under him and down he went.

The Spanish Movistar rider then slid across the tarmac, under a roadside crash barrier and off the road.

He looked like he'd had a narrow escape as the drop off the road was not significant but obviously his injuries tell a different story.

The Spanish road race champion was in the breakaway at the time when the official car got in his way and put him off his line coming down the Alto de Tollos.

He hit his leg hard off the iron roadside barrier and was taken to hospital in Alcoy where he has had surgery for the fractures to his tibia and fibula of the left leg.

He won't now be part of what looks certain to be an overall win on the race with Nairo Quintana after the final stage tomorrow and now faces a long road back.

However, aged 31 years, he still has plenty of time to get back on track.

Rojas, bottom right, before the stage readying for battle with his Movistar team mates including Vuelta leader Nairo Quintana in the red leader's jersey.
