While road racing is set to resume in the Republic in just three weeks time, a decision has been taken to postpone the National Road Championships, which were initially due to take place in late June.
Had the championships gone ahead in their initial slots it would have meant the Irish titles being decided when many riders had just a couple of weeks racing done.
Furthermore, the specific details of how many cyclists will be permitted at events, as well as officials and spectators, remain unclear. That uncertainty would have made planning the TT and road race championships very challenging.
Cycling Ireland has now said the championships will be held later in the season, though the date is not yet set.
The races will take place in Co Wicklow and will be organised by officials from several clubs, including those from Orwell Wheelers. who ran a fantastic championships five years ago when Nicolas Roche won the elite men's title.
“Due to Covid19 restrictions and limited preparation time
for athletes, the 2021 Road National Championships will be moved from its
original date to later in the season. Work is ongoing to secure a suitable
date,” Cycling Ireland said.
“The event will take place in Co Wicklow and feature time
trial and road racing for senior, U23, and junior riders.”
The BMX National Championships which were due to take place
on July 7th have also been rescheduled and further information about those
races and the road and TT events will be published in the weeks ahead.
