Maeve Gallagher takes first elite international triathlon victory

Maeve Gallagher celebrates her win in the heat of Dakar, Senegal, earlier today

Maeve Gallagher has taken her first big win on the elite international triathlon circuit.

The international cyclist was representing Ireland at the ATU Sprint Triathlon Cup in Dakar, Senegal, today when she took a commanding win.

Gallagher only last weekend represented Ireland in the U20 race at the European Crosscountry Championships.

Those athletics championships were the third Europeans she had competed in for Ireland this year have already been on the Irish cycling team and triathlon team for Continental championships.

Today in Senegal she took a brilliant win; seeing off runner-up Basmla Elsalamoney (Egypt) by 1:07 after just over one hour of racing.

Rounding out the podium on the day, some 2:10 behind Gallagher, was Esra Nur Gokcek (Turkey).
