Gallagher picked for Ireland in third sport (for third Europeans of 2019)

Not content with making the Irish team for major events in cycling and triathlon this year, Maeve Gallagher has now been selected onto the national athletics team.

The Co Mayo athlete, who competes on the
bike for Castlebar Cycling Club, does her running with Swinford Athletic Club.

She has been named on the Irish team for
the U20 race at the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon on December
8th.

It will be her third Europeans of the
year having competed in the cycling and triathlon Europeans in September and
May respectively.

Gallagher, who turned 18 years old in September,
has been Irish junior triathlete of the year and Irish schools triathlon
champion.

In running she has won medals at the
junior cross country championships in the U17 and U18 categories and is also
the holder of the all-Ireland schools mile record.

In cross country Gallagher
competed for Ireland in the Celtic Cross Country Games in January. She also ran
to gold on the track in the national championships in the 1500m in this summer.

She was 3rd in the ETU Junior European
Cup in Bucharest in June of last year and this season she competed in triathlon
in the Tokyo Olympics test event in August.

That appearance in Japan was one of six
times she represented Ireland in triathlon in 2019, racing the European juniors
in May when she placed 11th.

Maeve Gallagher also
picked up one of her best results at the elite Europeans sprint triathlon in
Russia this year coming 15th.

In cycling she competed for Ireland on the bike several times this year, including the Europeans, Worlds and Rás na mBan and won the Irish junior title on the road.

She finished the Europeans in 38th and
was in with a shout of a medal in the Worlds until a finishing straight crash
took her out, though she remounted and came home in 25th.

At Rás na mBan she was 6th overall;
climbing among the best in the race riding against elites.

She is picked on the Irish athletics
team for Lisbon with: Aoife O’Cuill St Coca’s AC, Danielle Donegan Tullamore
Harriers AC, Eimear Maher Dundrum South Dublin AC, Jodie McCann Dublin City
Harriers AC and Sarah Kelly Inisowen AC.
