Yesterday's stage 11 at the Giro d'Italia, on a Strade Bianche course, was hyped for months and it did not disappoint. Race leader Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) and his team blew the race apart and stamped their authority all over the event.

Ireland's Dan Martin of Israel Start-Up Nation was one of the big losers of the day as he was distanced on the first section of gravel and was on the back foot from that point, eventually shedding minutes to his rivals.

Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-QuickStep) spent the last 20km fighting to limit his losses as he found himself playing nail to Bernal's hammer.

It was a stage for the ages, won by 21-year-old Mauro Schmid (Qhubeka ASSOS). A late call-up by his team for the race, he took the victory in a two-up sprint from 22-year-old Alessandro Covi (UAE-Team Emirates) after those two had pressed clear when the breakaway blew apart in the finale.
