Giro d'Italia stage 15 was neutralised early in the stage today after a very large crash occurred in the peloton. While some riders had struggled back onto their bikes and others were being treated by medics on the road, a number of riders are confirmed as having been forced to abandon.
The biggest name to be forced out was Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), who was 6th overall and the only rider able to stay with Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) on stage 11.
Also out due to crash injuries are Ruben Guerreiro (EF Education Nippo), Natnael Berhane (Cofidis) and Jos Van Emden (Jumbo Visma).
Other riders also involved in the crash included Sebastien Reichenbach (Groupama-FDJ) and the Jumbo Visma duo of Tobias Foss and Edoardo Affini as well as Tony Gallopin (AG2R Citroën), Salvatore Puccio (Ineos Grenadiers) and three from Astana Premier Tech; Samu Batti, Vadim Pronskiy and Gorka Izagirre - among others.
The crash happened just after the race had started on an exposed causeway over water just outside the starting town of Grado. It was breezy at the time and the pressure was on as many riders were attacking in a bid to get into the breakaway.
But just as a breakaway had formed the crash happened in the bunch and the race was halted soon after. The riders who had made the breakaway were irate at being stopped, though that was before they realised the extent of the crash behind them.
The stage resumed after about 20 minutes, though some of
the fallers were drifting off the back and/or receiving medical attention on
the move.
