Gardaí investigating death of second cyclist (20s), both fatalities on same day

Gardaí are investigating the deaths of two cyclists who were killed in crashes involving drivers in counties Meath and Carlow on the same day

A second cyclist died on the roads of the Republic yesterday, Friday, as a man in his 20s was killed last night in Carlow, just hours after a man in his 80s was killed in a hit and run in Batterstown, Co Meath, while he was cycling.

The second fatal crash, which claimed the life of the man in Carlow, occurred late last night and involved a driver in a car. Gardaí have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The fatal collision took place on the N80 at Kilmeany, at approximately 11:00pm, Garda Headquarter said in a statement.

"The cyclist, a man aged in his 20s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body was transferred to the mortuary in Waterford University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be arranged," the Garda said.

"The road has been closed between the Tinryland junction and the M9 for an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

"Any road users who may have camera footage - including dash-cam - and were travelling in the area between 10:45pm and 11:10pm on Friday 12th September 2025, are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí."
