
A man has died after he was the victim of a hit and run by a driver while he was cycling in Co Meath today, Friday. Though the victim was taken from the scene in Batterstown, Ballivor, Co Meath, he hostpital, he was pronounced dead there.
Gardaí have launched a criminal investigation into the fatal crash and have appeal for witnesses to come forward. especially the drivers of any heavy goods vehicles in the area on Friday morning.
"Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision, which occurred at Batterstown, Ballivor, Co Meath, this morning, Friday 12th September," Garda HQ said in a statement.
"Shortly after 9.59am, gardaí and emergency services responded to fatal hit-and-run collision on the R156. The collision involved a cyclist and a vehicle that failed to remain at the scene. The male cyclist, aged in his 80s, was discovered unresponsive, and removed to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.
"The road is currently closed for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward."
Any road users who may have camera footage - including dash-cam - and were travelling in the area between 9.30am and 10.00am on Friday are asked to make the footage available to investigating Gardaí.
Gardaí saod they were "particularly interested" in the movements of heavy goods vehicles - rigid or articulated trucks - in the area at the time.
