Kevin McCambridge, one of Ireland’s top young riders, has been forced out of action for a period in France after crashing at the weekend and breaking his collarbone.
The incident, which occurred during a race, is the latest
set-back for the teenager who was out of action for a short period with
Covid-19 earlier in the year. However, on that occasion his time on the
sidelines was limited and he was able to resume racing quite quickly.
McCambridge (AVC Aix En Provence) crashed on Saturday in the inaugural edition of Ronde du Lionnais, a 155km elite national race in Grez-Neuville in the Maine-et-Loire department in western France.

He told stickybottle the racing was
starting to split in the crosswinds on the final lap of a flat circuit and
while he was sitting 4th in the group he turned around to assess the damage
behind and was instantly on the ground having crashed.
“I got up
to continue riding the bike but I realised I had a lot of pain coming from my
shoulder and elbow,” he said.
“I’ll stay in France where I am being looked after by the team and get my treatment over here. I’m waiting for an operation to speed up the recovery process so I’ll be back on the bike as soon as possible.”

While the broken collarbone is a set-back for him, there
is still plenty of time to run in the 2021 season meaning he should have lots
of time to recover and regain form and then go on for a long block of racing.
He signed with British Continental team Ribble Weldtite
Pro Cycling for 2020 but with most of the season cancelled in the UK and much
of it scrapped in Ireland, he had limited opportunities.
However, the 19-year-old put in two fantastic
performances at the National Road Championships. He recorded the second fastest
time of the elite and U23 male riders in the TT and claimed silver in the U23
title race behind Ben Healy.
And in the road race he was on the attack with the pro
riders at the head of the race before eventually finishing in 6th place.
McCambridge was also national junior TT champion in 2019 in his second year in the
category.
