Deignan returns to racing for Team Sky after six-month off season

Philip Deignan has not raced since last September but has been named in the eight-man Team Sky line-up for next Wednesday's Nokere Koerse-Danilith Classic in Belgium.

Philip Deignan is set to make his long-awaited start to the 2016 racing season in next week’s 1.HC-ranked Nokere Koerse-Danilith Classic in Belgium.

Amazingly, it will be almost six months to the day since the Irishman last pinned on race numbers when he goes to the start-line in next Wednesday’s one-day event.

His last race was the GP Montreal in mid-September where he was listed as a non-finisher.

He would have started racing by now normally but a broken elbow sustained at a December training camp set him back.

While one-day Belgian classics might not be Deignan’s forte, it’s a hard and hilly race of some 200 kilometres where the winner often emerges from a sprint.

Team Sky could pin their hopes on someone like Andy Fenn who is capable of winning from such situations, or perhaps Lars PeterNordhaug, who won last year's Tour de Yorkshire.

Also on the Team Sky start-list are; Alex Peters, Gianni Moscon, Michal Golas, Danny Van Poppel and Christian Knees.

Less than half the field are WorldTour teams with the remainder made up of ProContinental and Continental squads.

Last year, Belgian Kris Boeckmans (Lotto-Soudal) took the honours while Kenny Dehaes (Wanty Groupe Gobert) and Franchesco Chicchi (Androni Giocatolli – Sidermec) have proved victorious in recent seasons.
