Dan Martin has been forced to make multiple stops and bike changes on the road at Giro stage 8 today, with the Irish rider looking a little bit more panicked during the third incident.
Initially the TV cameras picked out Martin coming back through the cavalcade after an apparent mechanical issue; the Israel Start-Up Nation rider making his way back on just as George Bennett (Jumbo Visma) was having an issue with his bike.
However, while Dan Martin got back into the bunch without any difficulty, his team mate Alessandro De Marchi hung around at the back of the peloton as a precaution.
Martin then appeared to be unhappy with something on his bike and signaled from the back of the peloton for his team car.
He then pulled into the side of the road for a bike change before rejoining the peloton for a second time. But just a few kilometres later he was holding his hand up again and looking for his team car.
The Irish rider, who is 9th overall and looking in great form, changed his bike by the roadside for a second time with just under 55km remaining on the stage.
Martin looked very smooth and calm when he had his initial problem. However, by the time he was changing his bike for the second time he was moving with much more urgency as the road was going up and riders like Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) were being dropped on the Bocca della Selva cat 2 climb.
The Groupama-FDJ team of race leader Attila Valter were riding on the front of the bunch in pursuit of a breakaway more than seven minutes up the road in advance of the finale. A final 3.1km climb at 6.5 per cent was set to end the 170km stage from Foggia to Guardia Sanframondi.
