The deceased was a woman in her 60s who died in the collision this afternoon on the Gap of Dunloe in Co Kerry.

The climb is very popular with cyclists and is something of an iconic ascent for riders from Ireland and those coming from abroad.

Before today’s fatality eight cyclist deaths had been reported by the media since the start of the year.

However, the Garda has said one of those eight incidents involved a man who was walking with a bike at the time he was hit by a vehicle.
