Cyclist airlifted to hospital after hit by car; Gardai investigate

A cyclist is critically ill in hospital after suffering serious injuries in a collission in Co Mayo.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at about 4.45pm on the R134, the road between Ballina and Killala.

A motorist driving a car collided with the injured man, who was knocked off his bike.

The exact cause of the collission is not yet known but is under investigation by the Garda.

The emergency services were alerted and arrived on the scene after a short period. The injured cyclist was attended to on the road by paramedics.

However, because he had suffered such serious injuries a decision was made to transfer him to hospital urgently.

He was taken by helicopter to Mayo University Hospital and remains in critical condition.

The road was sealed off after the Garda arrived on the scene. It remained closed overnight to facilitate an examination by the Garda investigators.

It has since reopened and local gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Both the cyclist and the driver of the vehicle involved were travelling in the same direction, towards Killala, at the time of the collission.

Ballina gardai are investigating the case. They are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time or who may have witnessed the collission to contact them.
