Less than 24 hours after news broke of a cyclist being killed having been hit by a car in Co Kerry, another cycling fatality has been confirmed.
In the latest case, news of which was just emerging this morning, a male cyclist who had been injured in a collision on Sunday has died in hospital.
He had been in collision with a car in Co Mayo on Sunday at about 4.45pm. And while he was airlifted from the scene to Mayo General Hospital his death has since taken place.
The man, who was in his 50s, died in hospital last night.
His death came just hours after a female cyclist died yesterday while riding on the Gap of Dunloe in Co Kerry. She was in collision with a motorist driving a 4X4 at about 3pm.
Aged in her 60s, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man injured in Co Mayo on Sunday and who died in hospital last night, was in critical condition since he was struck by the vehicle.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at about 4.45pm on the R134, the road between Ballina and Killala.
Both the cyclist and the driver of the vehicle involved were travelling in the same direction, towards Killala, at the time of the collision.
Gardai in Killarney are investigating the death of the cyclist yesterday on the Gap of Dunloe. And the investigation into the collision in Co Mayo is being carried out by Ballina gardai.
Both investigations are appealing for witnesses and in both cases the scenes were sealed off and roads examined by the gardai.
The latest deaths bring to nine the number of cyclists who have been killed on the roads this year.
A tenth cycling fatality had been reported by the media but it now appears that man was walking with his bike, rather than cycling it, at the time he was struck by a vehicle and killed.
There were 10 cyclists killed in all of last year, putting the rate of fatalities in 2017 far ahead of the same period 12 months ago.
