Another attack on a cyclist has been reported around the
Sally Gap area of Co Wicklow, though on this occasion the rider’s bike was not
stolen.

However, a report received by the Reservoir Cogs cycling club - which is based in Blessington, Co Wicklow - described the incident as an attempted theft.

That report has come from a member of the local community after a friend from the UK cycling around Ireland was targeted in the latest incident.

“On Monday, September between 16th between 4.00-4.05pm in thick fog on the Sally Gap he was the victim of an attempted bike theft,” the local said of the incident involving their British friend.

“A car had been traveling behind him for some time. On overtaking, the car pulled in very close.

“The passenger door was
opened onto him and made contact. He somehow managed to stay on the bike and
was uninjured. The car then left the scene.”

The targetted cyclist managed to get the registration of the car and other details; such as the colour of the vehicle and the presence of three occupants inside.

The incident was reported to the Garda and is the latest
in a number of similar events in the area.

In July the Dublin Cycling Campaign highlighted a warning to cyclists about riding in the Dublin and Wicklow mountains alone following an attempted mugging.

It said it had been contacted by a cyclist who reported
he had been targeted by three men near Laragh in Co Wicklow.

From the description given the cyclist believed those who tried to grab him were intent on mugging him for his bike and phone.

Last month another cyclist was targeted in an attack at Sally Gap during which his bike was stolen.

Cyclist Ian Baldwin said he was attacked very close to
the Sally Gap junction on August 24th.

“Two guys in a car drove me off the road into a ditch and nicked my bike,” he said at the time. “Luckily my phone was in my back pocket not my stem bag."

He added he had suffered no serious injuries apart from road rash as a result of falling. He reported the attack to the Garda.
