Warning over muggings of cyclists for carbon fibre bikes in Wicklow

A warning about muggings of cyclists for their bikes in the Dublin and Wicklow mountains has been shared after one cyclist said he was attacked.

The Dublin Cycling Campaign has highlighted a warning to
cyclists about riding in the Dublin and Wicklow mountains alone following an attempted
mugging.

It said it had been contacted by a cyclist who reported he
had been targeted by three men near Laragh in Co Wicklow.

From the description given, below, the cyclist believes
those who tried to grab him were intent on mugging him for his bike and phone.

And he suggested the three men involved very likely had
chosen that location because they knew cyclists on expensive bikes would be
passing.

The cyclist’s message to Dublin Cycling Campaign stated: “A
word of advice and warning. Don’t go up Kippure or Sally Gap to Laragh on your
own on a bike.

“I was assaulted yesterday by three fellas in a white Ford
Transit van trying to steal my bike and phone.

“(I) managed to fight them off and luckily a car came along
and I flagged them down and the van drove off.

“They are targeting that road because they know (cyclists)
going up there will have good carbon bikes.

“(I) reported it to Rathfarnham Garda. They had a car up
that way 30 minutes earlier”.

Obviously this is a popular area for cycling and that will,
and should, remain the case. However, until more emerges perhaps it is best to
ride in that area with other cyclists if you can.
