Julian Alaphilippe is out of La Vuelta after a crash on today's stage 11, with QuickStep-Alpha Vinyl team mate and race leader, Remco Evenepoel, now missing a big asset as he tries to defend his lead.
Alaphilippe was only just building his racing condition after breaking multiple broken bones following his crash at Liège–Bastogne–Liège in April.
The French rider has also sustained hemo pneumothorax, which results in air becoming trapped in the chest cavity and causes the lung to collapse, as well as a broken shoulder and broken ribs.
