5km limit may be placed on cycling, all exercise, under new Covid-19 plan

The dreaded 5km from home exercise zone is back in consideration as it is part of the Level 5 conditions now being recommended by NPHET to the Government

The Government is being advised to put all parts of the Republic on Level 5 of the Living with Covid19 plan, which would involve limitations once again on cycling, like all forms of exercising.

People would be asked to stay at home, aside for essential reasons, under the plan and while exercising outdoors is permitted under Level 5 it is restricted to within 5km of home.

However, even if the Republic is placed on a nationwide Level 5 plan it is possible some of the restrictions could be watered down.

Earlier in the pandemic the same 'KM from home' restrictions applied, with people told to stay within a 2km zone around their home when exercising initially.

That was later extended to 5km and then to 20km, though
the latter zone was not enforced as strictly.

However, during the period the 2km and 5km zone exercise
rule was in place it was enforced by gardai manning checkpoints.

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) has recommended to the Government that all 26 counties in the Republic now go to Level 5 for six weeks.

It is the second time the Level 5 recommendation has been made and is being considered by the Government.

Tomorrow, Saturday, Taoiseach Micheal Martin, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar and Green Party leader Eamon Ryan are due to hold a meeting with senior health officials to discuss the six-week Level 5 proposal.

At an EU summit in Brussels Micheal Martin said all advice
from NPHET was taken “very seriously”.

He added: “This will get good consideration. I don’t want
to put a timeline on it. We want to have situation well documented."

Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan are already on Level 4 until November 10th and the rest of the country is currently in the middle of a three-week period of Level 3.

Another 1,000 cases of Covid-19 were confirmed on Friday along with three further deaths of people who had the virus.

All cycling races are now suspended in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, though there are currently no restrictions on how far cyclists can venture from home to train.
