The practice of the yellow jersey and his team drifting off the back of the bunch on the final day to celebrate a stage race win has become commonplace in recent years. However, it doesn't always go according to plan because some riders' bike handling skills are a risk for everyone.
And at the end of stage 10 at Vuelta Ciclistica Internacional a Guatemala today, race leader Gerson Toc (Decoba-ASO Quetzaltenango) and his team were left red-faced when going for the epic team photo took a sudden turn for the worse.
The race leader and four team mates came up the finishing straight in Finca el Zapote in a line across the road all celebrating with their arms around each other. However, one of their number looked very unsteady when he took his hands off the bars and he was soon tumbling towards the tarmac.
The others all paid the price, falling hard as they crossed the finish line. The good news was that Toc was able to finish and he came away with the win. However, the team crash is likely to live as long in the memory as his overall victory.
