Xeno Young, who has proven so good on the track, is now starting to bang out the road race wins. He took the Emyvale GP after a win on Mondello the week before last.
Xeno Young took his second road win of the season by catching the breakaway on the hop at yesterday’s Emyvale GP in Co Monaghan.
Just when the
Powerhouse Sport man looked like he was a spent force, he battled his way back
on to the breakaway.
And when he
regained contact he was going at such speed he passed them; forging clear to
win.
The main event
took in just under five laps of the course, with five passages of the main climb
to contend with.
While the A2
riders enjoyed a handicap on the scratch riders, they were caught shortly after
the second lap began.

With plenty of
aggression off the front when the race came together, a breakaway soon formed
and pulled clear.
Eventual winner
Young was in that escape along with team mate Lindsay Watson and David
Brody (Castlebar Cycling Club).
Also present was Constantine Bartels (Waterford RC), Angus
Fyffe (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Ryan Reilly (Dan Morrissey-MIG-Pactimo) and
Cathal Clarke (Armagh-Down).
The gap between the breakaway and the peloton grew to two minutes before extending even further.
On the fourth time up the climb, a chase group forged
clear of the bunch. Containing eight riders, the chasers closed the gap to the
escape.
However, when they had pegged it back to about one
minute, they were delayed when they closed up on the final kilometres of the
women’s race.

Unfortunately when they were held up that broke their
cooperation and saw the breakaway pull out the gap once more.
Up ahead, in the final 10km the breakaway men began
attacking each other. And though Young would win the race, he slipped off the
back with about 6km to the finish.
However, he kept at it off the back and managed to claw his
way back on with about 3km to go.
As he caught the group, there was a break in their
attacking and Young used his speed to go past them.
He gained a gap solo before Waterford’s Constantine
Bartels got across to him. And that’s how it stayed to the line, where Young
got the better of Bartels to win.
He adds that to his victory of a couple of weeks ago at
the Mondello Series in Co Kildare.
Watson, a winner at the Hilltown GP on Saturday, took the sprint for 3rd place from Brody, Fyffe, Reilly and Clarke.
David Walshe (Castlebar Cycling Club) came through for 8th place with Mitchell McLaughlin (Four Masters CC) in 9th and Matthew McCullagh (Sundrive Track Team) placing 10th.
That trio had been in the chasing group but got clear of it in the closing kilometres to mop up the final placings in the top ten.
