Woods, Drennan and Ryan triumph at De Ronde Cross, Cork

Irish Masters 50 cyclocross champion, Trevor Woods, was best in the men’s ‘A Race’ at De Ronde Cross in Co Cork; the evergreen competitor putting his team mate Richard Maes to the sword today.

Just behind the All human-VeloRevolution winner and runner-up, Sam Bolger (Killarney CC) took the final step on the podium after recovering for a sluggish opening lap. That first circuit also hindered eventual runner-up Maes, who crashed hard but managed to keep going.

It was Maes who got the best start, despite his crash, and after the opening lap of six at Cork Showgrounds he had nudged slightly ahead of his team mate Woods. However, Woods clawed those few seconds back, and some, on the second lap. And by the time the leaders went out onto the third passage of the circuit Woods was 10 seconds up on Maes.

Bolger was another 12 seconds back followed by Mark Pinfield (Blarney CC), new Cycling Ireland paracycling coach Jamie Blanchfield (Panduit Carrick Wheelers), Michael Collins (Newcastle West CC) and Joseph Donworth (Limerick Cycling Club).

Out front it was Woods – who has been focusing on triathlon alongside his cycling of late – continued to work away through the next couple of laps; putting 23 seconds into Maes and eight seconds in Bolger on the third lap and extending his advantage by a further handful of seconds over both on lap four.

Over the last two laps, though Woods was now well clear, Maes fought back a little, closing up to Woods by five seconds while Bolger drifted further back from the two leaders. In the end Woods had time to get off his bike and walk over the line, celebrating his win 30 seconds up on Maes and 1:18 up on Bolger. Pinfied finished in 4th place, at 2:13, with Blanchfield 5th at 2:55 and Collins in 6th at 5:24.

In the women’s race, the small field of just three starters was trimmed back when the highly fancied Grace Young (All human-VeloRevolution), who has dominated in Munster this season, was forced out of the contest after three laps.

Young suffered a nightmare opening lap, of four, after the tape marking out the course broke and she went the wrong way. She found herself 10 minutes down on leader, and eventual winner, Sally Drennan (Midleton CTC) after that opening lap.

Drennan gained time on her team mate, and eventual runner-up, Sinead Rock on each of the four laps. She ran out the winner on the day by 1:55 over Rock.

In the men’s ‘B Race’, it was very close between Ailbe Ryan (Black House Racing) and Dermot Logue (Panduit Carrick Wheelers) through the first three laps of five. However, Ryan then began to turn the screw and gained 39 seconds on Logue on the penultimate lap and 31 seconds on the final lap.

Just behind runner-up Logue, Rob Williams (Unattached Munster) came through very strong late in the day. He was almost 1:30 down on Logue with three laps completed but brought that gap right back, to just nine seconds, by the chequered flag.

Ryan took the win by 1:09 from Logue with Williams 3rd at 1:18. David Fox (Orwell Wheelers) was 4th at 1:43, Timothy Hayes (Unattached Munster) placed 5th at 2:04 and John Turner (Orwell Wheelers) rounded out the top six, some 2:35 down on winner Ryan.

In the U16 races, Hugh Og Mulhearne (Panduit Carrick Wheelers) won the boys event by one minute from Ben O’Keeffe (Killarney CC) with Ciaran O’Sullivan (Greenmount CA) in 3rd, just two seconds down on O’Keeffe. In the U16 girls race, Hannah Dennehy O’Sullivan (Sliabh Luachra CC) was best.
