Esther Wong (Hess Cycling Team) has been crowned elite Irish champion at the National Cyclocross Championships in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, today.
Though last year's runner-up, and still a junior rider this year, Greta Lawless (Team WORC) pushed Wong hard in the early stages today, Wong began to turn the screw in the second half of the 45-minute contest.
And by the time she was in the latter stages, over the last couple of laps, Wong had established a clear lead, maintaining it all the way to the finish for victory over Lawless.
A longer period then elapsed before the bronze medal was won, after a brilliant battle between two of the pre-race medal favourites.
Though former champion Maria Larkin (Cuttin Crew-Donkey Label) looked like she had it in the bag, Hannah McClorey (Doltcini-Cycle Division) came back at her on the final lap and just won the battle for bronze.
Jean Wilson (EPIC MTB Expert Cycles) won the Masters Irish title from Aishling O’Connor (Orwell Wheelers Cycling Club) and Helen White (Stamullen RC).
