First-year junior rider Mark Downey has taken his first win for the Nicolas Roche Performance team at the West Down GP. The Standard Life-backed former Banbridge CC man was part of a large breakaway group that split in the closing kilometres.
That left four men just seconds ahead at the finish, where the teenager got the better of another emerging young rider Craig McAuley of VO2 Development.
Best of the rest was Curran Racing's David Hamilton who was with the leading duo coming up to the line but was distanced by their sprint kick to the line and cramped badly. However, he was far enough ahead of Cathal Doyle (Carn Wheelers) in fourth to hang onto his place.
Just a couple of seconds behind those four came home the remainder of the breakaway, with Gary Crory (VC Glendale) taking the sprint for fifth, just ahead of North Down CC's Paul Ferguson.
