Seth Dunwoody got a lot of publicity and praise for his 2nd place at U23 Paris-Roubaix on Sunday, when he rode a fantastic race. He was narrowly beaten for victory by Davide Donati (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe Rookies) after leading out the sprint only for the Italian to pip him on the line.
But it's often the work that the emerging U23 riders do for their team mates - especially when riding for their development teams' World Tour squads - that is more impressive and often goes unnoticed. Dunwoody's final effort at Ronde van Limburg (1.1) is a perfect example.
He was riding the Belgian race yesterday, Wednesday, for the Bahrain Victorious World Tour team. It was hoping to slingshot Phil Bauhaus to victory, with a lead-out in place to help the German.
Dunwoody, competing just three days after his huge U23 Paris-Roubaix performance, was the final lead-out man and the sheer power of his effort was really impressive.
He took up position on the front in the final kilometre, hitting the afterburners and stringing out the peloton behind him. The length of time he was on the front was just as impressive as the power he was putting out.
When he finally swung over and the sprint began, one of the Unibet Rose Rockets riders tried to sprint past Dunwoody. However, the Irishman was able to go again, despite having been on the front for so long.
In the end, Bauhaus had to be content with 5th place after Tim Merlier (Soudal QuickStep) easily won the sprint for victory. Dunwoody slid back through field, finishing 51st and losing 21 seconds in the final few hundred metres.
To have the power to turn out a lead-out like this, in a major pro race, and still aged 19, is incredibly impressive.
