Matt Teggart has been on fire on the opening two stages of the Tour of Britain, with dominant breakaway rides both days. However, he kept the best until last yesterday when the king of the mountains leader bridged across to Teggart's breakaway just as it was being caught near the top of a climb.
Teggart (WiV-SunGod) had already won all three intermediate sprints during yesterday's stage - just as he had done on stage 1. And as he neared the top of the first categorised climb of the day, with just over 20km to go, the breakaway had been trimmed from six to two riders; Teggart and Adam Lewis (St Piran).
At that point - with the two leaders just ahead of the reduced peloton on the climb - king of the mountains leader Stephen Bassett (Humanpowered Health) jumped across to them, He caught them and then gathered himself before sprinting forward, aiming to take maximum points on the climb; Wanside Rigg.
However, while he instantly gapped Teggart and Lewis, the Irish rider realised Bassett was struggling. He wound the gear up again behind the American, closed up to his back wheel and then overtook him to easily take the prime.
It was a really impressive last turn out front by the Irishman, who put himself up to 3rd in the climbers' classification - as well as consolidating his lead in the sprints classification. His claiming maximum points on the first climb denied Bassett more points. And when Teggart's team mate, Jacob Scott, went on to take points on the second and third climbs, he took the climbers' jersey from the American.
