Vingegaard, Roglič, Evenepoel all crash out of Itzulia Basque Country | Video

This was a very bad crash, with many riders out of the race after they crashed into, or over, a concrete roadside storm drain. Some of the big names are out

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), Primož Roglič (Bora-hansgrohe) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) are all out of Itzulia Basque Country after a very heavy crash on stage 4.

A number of riders came down on a sweeping left hander, overshooting it and crashing into or over an open, concrete-lined, storm drain by the roadside. A total of 12 riders came down, with six taken to hospital.

Vingegaard looked like he was especially badly injured and remained on the ground for a long time, though he was conscious as it was clear from the TV images he was moving.

He was eventually taken away by ambulance. This evening his team confirmed he had suffered a broken collarbone and multiple broken ribs.

While Roglič, who also crashed yesterday, and Evenepoel were able to walk to the nearby ambulances, Evenepoel was nursing his arm in the manner of a rider with a suspected broken collarbone.

Evenepoel later confirmed he had suffered a broken collarbone and broken shoulder blade.

Of the top trio - though they were not the only ones to crash - Vingegaard's condition looked the most serious. While the bunch continued for a few kilometres, as it dipped just inside 30km to go, it was then brought to a halt as so many ambulances were required to treat the injured back the road.

Others who crashed include Natnael Tesfatsion (Lidl Trek) and EF Education-EasyPost duo Sean Quinn and Alexander Cepeda. The stage was stopped and neutralised for the general classification.

Just a couple of minutes before the big crash, the breakaway arrived at the same spot where the incident would happen. One of the breakaway riders ran off the road, see final video below. However, he just about managed to avoid the open storm drain, before coming back onto the road after staying upright.

More to come.
