Vingegaard head and shoulders above everyone else | Tour de France Stage 16

Jonas Vingegaard blows away the field on stage 16 as he puts in a monster performance in today's time-trial. The Danish rider posted a time of 32' 36", besting 2nd place and closest GC contender Tadej Pogačar by over 90 seconds.

Vingegaard's result has massive implications in the retention of his Tour de France title. Until stage 16, there was no separating himself and Pogačar, on the mountains the two were joined at the hip. The 2021 winner of the Tour could not keep up with Vingegaard's pace today however.

The yellow jersey started out as he meant to go on with the early live timing showing a significant gap of 20 seconds to then leader of the time trial Wout van Aert. Just 25 minutes into the stage, Vingegaard built a lead of more than a minute over his rival, it was a matter of damage limitation for Pogačar.

Pogačar, in his defence, held his own in the time trial as he managed 2nd on the podium. The Slovenian was not looking for a silver medal however, he had lost precious minutes and seconds to the malliot jaune, 1' 38" to be exact. Vingegaard now sits 10 seconds better than that in the GC standings.

It will be a tall order to close that gap with only five stages remaining, but if there's any man in the peloton who could do so, it's Tadej Pogačar.
