Mathieu van der Poel has thrown down the gauntlet to his World Championships rivals with another powerful display at the Tour of Britain.
Not only did the Dutch Corendon Circus rider win the stage and extend his race lead, he also said his form was getting better every day.
After 188.7km from Warwick to Burton Dassett Country Park today, van der Poel was simply head and shoulders above even the best of the rest.
As he had done three days ago, he pulled the trigger on the uphill finish and powered to a clear win, untroubled by any of his rivals.
Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton -Scott), who has already won a stage and led the race, was 2nd today and came over the line with his two hands off the bars shrugging.
With just one stage remaining van der Poel leads overall by 12 seconds from Trentin.
Ireland's Rory Stewart (Canyon dhb p/b Bloor Homes) still leads the sprints classification. He was 94th today some 11 minutes down on a day when the field split to pieces.
Eddie Dunbar (Team Ineos) was 63rd at 5:28 while Conor Dunne (Israel Cycling Academy) was 72nd at 5:43.
