Mathieu van der Poel has been at the top of the MTB pro
game in recent months, to add to the same spot in the cyclocross world, but he
wasted no time getting busy back on the road today.
The Dutch rider put in an incredible sprint to win the opening stage in the Arctic Race of Norway
He opened his sprint much earlier that the others still
in the reduced peloton, and even wondered aloud later why sprinters always wait
so long.
Steve Cummings (Dimension Data) had gone solo from an aggressive finale; breaking clear with about 5km to go on the 181km stage from Å to Leknes.
However, while Cummings kept it going within almost
touching distance of the line, once van de Poel hit the accelerator it was all
over.
The Corendon Circus rider saw off Danny van Poppel (Jumbo-Visma) and Andrea Pasqualon (Wanty-Gobert) to win it in some style.
