Video: Some wild on-board footage from stage 3 at the Vuelta

Crashes were only part of the on-board action on stage 3 of the Vuelta, with lead-out men dropping back through the bunch like stones and a hairy pinch point and speed ramps adding to the madness.

The on-board footage recorded on Monday’s stage 3 of the Vuelta was pretty hectic, and not just for the crashes.

The field squeezed through a tunnel pinch point just a couple of kilometres from the finish in Malaga after 158km, with the footage really capturing the control the pros have in negotiating such a tricky feature at high speed.

Dutch champion Niki Terpstra even chooses that exact spot to take off his sunglasses and put them away as he readies himself for the final push to the line.

And the crash that saw Nacer Bouhanni of Cofidis fall hard with, among others, Daniele Bennati (Tinkoff-Saxo) is also captured. It was the second spill in as many days for both men.

Nicolas Roche, wearing the combined jersey, gets some fluids into him on a hot stage 3 at the Vuelta on Monday.

There’s also some great footage at the start of the stage 3 clip below showing the riders fly over speed bumps in the road.

And in the sprint to the finish line, won by Peter Sagan of Tinkoff-Saxo, one big lead-out man dropping back through the front of the bunch like a stone narrowly avoids being hit by those sprinting flat out for the finish line.

Nicolas Roche (Tem Sky) and Dan Martin (Cannondale-Garmin) both finished in the bunch and remain 3rd and 4th overall; 15 and 24 seconds respectively behind race leader Esteban Chaves (Orica GreenEdge)

Tuesday’s stage 4 from Estepona to Vejer de la Frontera is 203km in length and includes two climbs on the finishing circuit. The final ramp is around 1.5km, with the finish at the summit.

It’s a final that could see Roche and Martin in the hunt for stage honours and the race leader’s jersey once again following their heroics on stage 2.
