Sam Bennett uncharacteristically dropped away from the peloton with 10km remaining on today's stage 2 at Tour de Wallonie and then waved the TV moto away from him, but it soon became clear after the stage that all was not well.
A number of riders crashed today, some breaking wheels or bikes, such was the state of some sections of road during the 172km stage into Wavre.
Greg van Avermaet (CCC Team), the only rider to win the race overall more than once, hit a pothole and broke his bike though he got back to the peloton.
Several riders made negative comments about the roads after the stage including Jetse Bol (Burgos-BH) and Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) while Luke Rowe of Team Ineos summed it up, saying: "What a shit course today".
Sam Bennett's Deceuninck-QuickStep team mates also Tweeted about the condition of the roads - see below - with the Irish rider retweeting their messages.
The team currently has two of its riders out of action - Fabio Jakobsen and Remco Evenepoel - after serious crashes at Tour de Pologne and Il Lombardia.
It was a disappointing day for Bennett today in Belgium as he went very close to winning yesterday's stage 1. He was just beaten by a late surge on the line from Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) and would have been in contention today if he'd gotten a clear run at the line.
When the TV camera today picked him out at the back of the bunch with just over 10km remaining - at the 1:35 point of the video below - he was clearly annoyed, with the reason for that becoming clear from his team mate's remarks after the stage.
Arnaud Demare (Groupama FDJ) won today's stage from Ewan, though the Australian rider retained the yellow jersey.
