Here’s a tale of fair play and sportsmanship to warm the cockles of your heart as we edge into Christmas week.
A rider in a race in Spain took victory despite suffering a puncture on the home straight when the man just behind him refused to overtake him.
Spanish cyclist Agustin Navarro knew he had been beaten fair and square by compatriot Ismael Esteban at the end of the cyclocross race in Cantabria in recent days.
So when Esteban suffered a puncture on the finishing straight just as he was about to claim the bronze medal, Navarro caught up to him but remained respectfully behind.
It meant Esteban could throw his bike over his shoulder and job to the line to complete the podium.
And the sportsmanship didn’t stop there; no sir.
Esteban was so impressed with his rival’s respect that he offered him his medal.
But Navarro played down his gesture, saying the third place performance and the medal were worth more than his actions and insisting Esteban keep his prize.
This is how they roll on the Spanish 'cross scene
