Video: Rider celebrates Giro stage win, unaware he hadn't won

D'Oh! Aussie Simon Clarke roars in triumph as he takes “victory” on stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia from the escape. The only trouble was, he hadn't won (Photo: Sirotti)

The video below captures the moment poor Simon Clarke (Orica GreenEdge) thought he had won stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia today, Tuesday.

He escaped in the breakaway that stole the day and caused such a massive chase behind that the field split to pieces; the presence of Roman Kreuziger (Tinkoff-Saxo) in the escape the main worry for the big favourites.

And while the Astana team of Fabio Aru did most of the chasing, Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) and Richie Porte (Team Sky) were also among a small group of overall favourites to catch the breakaway.

However, by the time they made the juncture, Cannondale-Garmin's Davide Formolo had taken flight from the escape and sailed into the finish to win solo.

Clarke was clearly unaware anybody was up the road and sprinted for the stage win, throwing his hands up only to be tapped on the hip by Giovanni Visconti (Movistar) and informed they were all only sprinting for 2nd place.

He looked very disappointed but perked up pretty quickly when he realised he was the new race leader.
