Fernando Gaviria took the victory as his team mate did some convenient swerving in the sprint to the line.

Nobody could argue with one of the QuickStep riders taking today’s stage 3 at the Giro d’Italia.

They split the race in the last 10km in the crosswinds; placing no fewer they six riders in the small lead group.

And as they piled the pressure on, Bob Jungels did huge turns to thin the lead group down.

It set it up nicely for Fernando Gaviria to rocket home for stage victory.

The young Colombian, riding his first ever Grand Tour, also took the race lead.

Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) was leader this morning but missed the decisive split. So it was very much a case of QuickStep on top today.

However, their sprint finish was a very messy on. Gaviria hit out and won but behind him, his team mate’s swerving effectively neutralised his main rival.

Italian national champion Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek-Segafredo) looked perfectly poised to challenge Gaviria.

Final swerve in sprint

But when Maximiliano Richeze swerved across the road towards him it forced Nizzolo to hesitate very slightly.

Any even slight pause at that stage of the game is normally crucial. And so it proved today; Nizzolo only managing to finish in 3rd behind Gaviria and Rüdiger Selig (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Have a look at the footage below and see what you think. Nizzolo probably wouldn’t have beaten Gaviria anyway, but we’ll never know.
